Second Generations, 1983-84
Digital Imaging

Childhood portraits, from birth through age 5, were transformed by replacing my eyes, nose, mouth and ears with my adult features. These autobiographical images represent an attempt to visually connect my then 20 something person with my personal image history. These are some of my first experiments with digital imaging created as a student at the CADRE Institute at SJSU. The works were created on a PC equipped with a "Targa Board" which was an early paint system predating Adobe Photoshop. Flatbed scanners did not exist at this time - the original images were scanned into the computer with a live video camera on a copy stand. There really weren't many options beyond dot-matrix printing at the time, as such, I photographed directly from the screen on black and white film for printing in the darkroom. The final pieces were printed each roughly 8x10" in size.
