After Yoko: Chess Set for the Browning of America, 2018
Chess set, paint

Inspired by Yoko Ono’s “White Chess Set”, first created in 1966, among a series of disrupted chess sets created by Fluxus artists. Ono’s work is subtitled 'Chess Set for playing as long as you can remember where all your pieces are'. This adaptation plays upon the “browning of America”, an oft-cited phenomena in the growing rightward/racist shift of white Americans. This project was created specifically for the "White Anxieties" at White Box NYC, curated by Raul Zamudio. A special thank you to my friend and artist Jack Toolin who constructed the chess set as per my specifications provided remotely.

Review of White Anxieties by Mark Bloch from White Hot Magazine.
